Fossil hunting on the Jurassic Coast

Early in the morning, the tide starts to recede, leaving behind "fresh" fossils

Fossil hunters start combing the beach.

A good place to look is where the mud flows out of the "porridge"

Fragments of Ammonites are a common find

The best Ammonites are still within the rock.
These will be taken back to the workshop and extracted

Some people have been doing this professionally  for 20+ years.

All heads are down. Sharp eyes are needed to spot fossils amongst the pebbles.

The Jurassic coast is famously erratic. Rock falls are a constant danger.

As the tide starts to encroach, a fossil hunter heads back
with the findings of the day
